In 1960, U.S. Navy physician William Henry relocated his young family from Alaska to a remote mountain valley in Washington State. Over the next 30 years, Dr. Henry would transform the face of medical and emergency services in a ranching community brought into the 20th Century by the construction of a cross-state Cascade Mountains highway. This volume is the doctor’s tale, told in his own words.
Pay You in Hay has gone through several printings and editions since it was first published by Dr. Henry’s wife Ann in 1999, shortly after her husband’s passing. This newly-updated “Final” Edition has been completed by Dr. Henry’s surviving family in honor of Ann Henry, who joined her husband in early 2023. It includes Ann’s original introduction as well as a collection of photos, a new biographical sketch by the Henrys’ daughter Cindy Button, and an epilogue describing the current state of emergency services in Washington’s Methow Valley.
